USS Arlington Community Alliance Activities

USS Arlington Model

The newly renovated Arlington CountEllen M. Bozman Government Center features a 6 ½ foot model (funded by the Alliance) of the USS Arlington in the lobby.  It is accompanied by a display of both still photos and monitors showing recent photos from the USS Arlington.

Annual Picnic

An annual picnic at Arlington Fire Station #5 around September 11th for sailors from the USS Arlington (when in port) is hosted by the Alliance.  Guests include local elected officials, first responders, and others.

9/11 Race

The Alliance coordinates USS Arlington crew members participating in the Arlington Police, Fire, Sheriff and ECC 9/11 Memorial 5K race each year by arranging registration, package pick-up, and parking.

USS Arlington Visits

On significant dates, such as the anniversary of 9/11, the Alliance coordinates visits by first responders to the USS Arlington to help commemorate that day.  First responders have also attended other significant events.  In addition, the Alliance has arranged for elected officials to visit the ship.

Tribute Room

The Tribute Room on the USS Arlington honors those that lost their lives at the Pentagon on 9/11.  The room serves to educate visitors and promote knowledge of the events on 9/11.  The room was originally funded by the Commissioning Committee from which the Alliance evolved. The Alliance provides items and/or funding as needed for additions to the Tribute Room.

Oakridge Elementary

Oakridge Elementary School in Arlington is the nearest school to the Pentagon.  The school has helped support crew members during deployment.  Crew members visit Oakridge as part of their community outreach.  The Alliance helps facilitate these exchanges.

USS Arlington at Sea Trips

The USS Arlington, through the Alliance, invites first responders, both retired and active, on the ship while underway.  This has included their “Friends & Family Cruise” and their “Tiger Cruise”. The “Tiger Cruise” is from Morehead City, NC to Norfolk, VA and includes tours, demonstrations, an even an evening movie on the flight deck.

Recognition

Those Captain’s that have demonstrated excellence in strengthening the bonds between the USS Arlington, 9/11 families, 9/11 first responders, and the Arlington community are recognized through proclamations from Arlington County and the Virginia Legislature by requests initiated by the Alliance.

Care Packages

The USS Arlington Community Alliance sent over 200 care packages to the sailors and marines serving on the USS Arlington.  Oakridge Elementary provided 50 of the care packages sent.  The Alliance maintains a link between the USS Arlington and 9/11 family members, first responders on 9/11, and the Arlington community.
